US Quidditch Cup 12 will be held on April 13 and 14, 2019 at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas. Round Rock hosted US Quidditch Cup 11 this past April, which had 63 collegiate and 24 community teams competing. Over 4,000 athletes, fans, officials, and volunteers attended.

We enjoyed true collaboration with US Quidditch tournament organizers as we prepared for and hosted the event at our new Round Rock Multipurpose Complex this past year, and we look forward to a continued partnership,” said Nancy Yawn, director of the Round Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau, a division of the City of Round Rock Sports Management and Tourism Department. “The Central Texas community loves quidditch, and we look forward to hosting players, families and fans in Round Rock for the national championship tournament again in 2019.”

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018-19 SEASON

USQ hosts regional championships that crown regional champions in each division and are part of the qualification process for teams attending the annual US Quidditch Cup. As part of membership benefits, all official teams may attend their regional championship with no event registration fee. The event dates and locations are available chronologically below. For all regional championships, the average driving team is based on the addresses for teams registered at the start of the 2017-18 season.

SUPER REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

As announced last summer, USQ requires a minimum regional size for each division. In the 2018-19 season, the minimum will increase from three teams to five teams. If a region does not have five teams fully registered in a division by 11:59pm ET on September 30, 2018, there will be no regional for that division in that region. Teams in that region and division will be required to attend an  assigned super regional championship instead.

Super regional championships are a combined event where teams from both regions in a pairing will compete jointly at the assigned event. Those teams will be competing for the same pool of US Quidditch Cup 12 bids.

A super regional championship is division-based. If one division has sufficient teams in both regions in a pairing, that division will take place independently and separately at each of those events. If either region does not meet the team minimum in a division, then both regions in the pairing will have a combined super regional championship for that division at the assigned event.

Regions have been paired together for super regional championships. The pairings are:

  • Great Lakes and Midwest, with Great Lakes hosting in the 2018-19 season
  • Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with Mid-Atlantic hosting in the 2018-19 season
  • Northwest and West, with West hosting in the 2018-19 season
  • South and Southwest, with Southwest hosting in the 2018-19 season

If a team cannot attend their designated regional championship due to extreme circumstances, a team may submit apply for a regional transfer waiver. Please see the link to the policy for additional details.

As mentioned above, teams have until the bid allocation registration deadline to sign-up and count for their region’s minimum in their division. However, due to its smaller size, the Northwest region will not have a specific regional championship in the 2018-19 season, with teams instead participating in a super regional championship with teams from the West.

More information about bid allocation will be available in August. Please note that gameplay policies page will be updated later this summer. While policies like those mentioned in the article last summer may be similar, the content from the older article may not still be current beyond what we’ve specifically called out here.

DATES

For fall regional championships, date availability outside of the last weekend in October and the first weekend in November was limited and restricted our flexibility with scheduling. For those reasons, we have decided to host fall regional championships over two weekends: October 27-28 and November 3-4. During each of those weekends, two different regional championships will take place simultaneously in two different cities. Event dates have been selected so that regions that are paired for a super regional championship will not both have their events on the same weekend. Spring regional championships will not overlap in this way.

THE BID PROCESS

This season, USQ took a big step forward in our bid process. Executive Director Sarah Woolsey and Events Director Mary Kimball began attending trade shows, like National Association of Sports Commissions and TEAMS, and handling direct outreach with new partners. Previously, Joe Pickett, USQ’s long time location coordinator, attended these conferences on USQ’s behalf and communicated with cities in the first stages of the bidding process. Once all bids were submitted, other USQ staffers in the events department (Kimball and Woolsey in recent years) would review bids, chose finalists, conduct site finalists, and select the final locations. Beginning in the 2018-19 season, Pickett will serve as a bidding consultant, and Woolsey and Kimball will directly oversee the entirety of event bidding. We are thankful to the work that Pickett has done over the years. His contributions to the sport cannot be understated.

The next full bid manual will be released later this summer. It will cover events in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. Preliminary information on what cities can expect is available here. Questions about bidding on USQ events should be directed to bidding@usquidditch.org.

US QUIDDITCH CUP 12 BID COMPARISON

Both Columbia and Round Rock had the following in common:

  • Previous experience hosting US Quidditch Cup
  • Field lighting on all fields
  • Fencing around the entire facility
  • Permanent indoor restrooms
  • Indoor climate-controlled administrative spaces
  • Free parking adjacent to the fields
  • Option for teams village location that is close to gameplay fields
    • One of the points of feedback from teams following US Quidditch Cup 9 in Columbia was the distance of the teams village from the fields. Columbia presented a different location in their bid this time around that would put teams adjacent to the playing fields, within the fenced boundary of the complex.

We received a lot of positive feedback following US Quidditch Cup 11 in Round Rock. In particular, players, officials, and volunteers loved the facility. We had great spectator turnout, and the tournament was the second largest quidditch event ever held, following World Cup V in New York City in 2011.

USQ remains committed to providing a safe space for all athletes, fans, officials, and volunteers, particularly including people of color and those who identify as LGBTQIA+. The safety of these attendees is put into heavy consideration when evaluating bids, and USQ staff looks at many aspects of a city’s level of inclusivity and safety, including local, regional, and state laws, indexes that measure equality and other issues, local partnerships, and community feedback. The city of Round Rock has been a very supportive partner in this regard. After each national championship, we use a variety of methods to gather feedback from players, spectators, staff, officials, and volunteers. As part of this season’s feedback process, we paid particular attention to the opinions of people of color and LGBTQIA+ individuals, both those on our staff and in the broader community. We’d like to thank these individuals for their invaluable feedback, and we are always open to to hearing more opinions from the community.

The Round Rock Multipurpose Complex is an extremely high quality facility that has everything we need to host a top-notch tournament. It has a lot of well maintained fields, ample parking, field lighting, and the entire complex is fenced in. There are also many hotels within 10-15 minutes of the fields. It is cheaper for teams on the West Coast to fly into the Austin airport than it is to go to many parts of the East Coast. Our staff will continue to work on cultivating relationships with cities who share our values, and we encourage anyone with specific safety concerns about any of our event locations to reach out to Sarah Woolsey at sarah.woolsey@usquidditch.org.
